ABOUT SHINE AFRICA FOUNDATION

Shine Africa Foundation is a faith based, non-profit, non-governmental organisation (NGO) established in 2006 by a group of indigenous community members who felt compelled to respond to the needs of vulnerable and marginalised people in the local communities particularly affected by civil war and poverty. Shine Africa’s main focus is to empower the local people, and create sustainable change. Our main programs are centred on public health, education, environmental management, livelihoods, food security and human rights.

In order to achieve the goals of our programmes, we focus on training respected members of the community to become ‘peer educators’ – in this way these people help to build awareness in the community of our programs and provide social mobilisation and referral to our services. In addition we partner with other organisations to provide comprehensive services and care.

HISTORY

The area of Teso sub-region has suffered from a gross abuse of human rights particularly in the aftermath of the invasion by LRA Rebels in 2003. The area was in the epicentre of war during which there was a huge amount of political turmoil and socio-economic disintegration. The organisation was founded and registered as a legal entity with the Registrar of Companies in 2009 with Reg. No. 107753 and registered with the NGO Board in 2011 with Reg .NO 8186 to facilitate recovery and development among the vulnerable and marginalised communities in these areas.

Formerly known as Shine Africa Ministries, in 2013 the organisation was re-branded as Shine Africa Foundation. We collectively felt this new name encompasses the strength of our work, as a foundation for sustainability together with our broad spectrum for programs. Our motto ‘“Empowerment through sustainable community led interventions in the Teso Sub-Region, “encapsulates the beliefs and ideals that guide our organisation.

VISION
A society in which the local population is empowered to equality of access to the whole spectrum of quality social services.

MISSION
To work in a holistic manner towards improving quality of life of vulnerable and marginalised individuals in the Teso sub-region, by empowerment through interventions that increase access to education, health care and sustainable living through income generating projects.

Our Goal:
Our ultimate goal is to focus on improving various areas of community life and fundamental human rights.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
The aspects we are concentrating on are public health, in particular HIV/AIDS sensitization and access to quality local healthcare services. Education of both children and adults is another main focus, tackling the problem of illiteracy and particularly supporting OVC through their education. Further to this we aim to establish sustainable income generating and agricultural development projects which the communities are able to self manage.

Within the community households we endeavour to improve issues of domestic violence, inequalities and general living standards. We also make it our aim to assist those in authority to act with social justice, democracy, transparency and accountability for their respective areas.

Our Christian faith plays an important part in our work. We believe our strength in God helps us in implement our key programs with our limited financial resources.
